There are two types of page layout projects. There are short and single-page projects that designers spend hours and hours painstakingly crafting so that every element is exactly right--and then there are long documents.
Long documents are projects that are one-, two-, three-hundred or more pages such as books, manuals, or magazines. The designers who work on long documents don’t have time to fuss with every single element. They need to automate as many page layout functions as possible. Of course, every element still needs to be exactly right!
How do you know when you’re working on a long document? Simple, when you’ve been working so long that you’ve missed dinner and the end is nowhere in sight and you can’t remember a time when you worked on something else--that’s a long document!
