Applying Work Flow Commands
The Creative commands are certainly the most fun to work with. However, not all of Fireworks' tricks are visual. Some are tools that allow you to work more productively. The workflow tools can be categorized in the following groups:
- Document
- Panel Layout Sets
- Resize Selected Objects
The Document group allows you to control how layers and frames are managed in Fireworks. You will find a very useful tool called Distribute to Layers. For this tool to work, you need to select an image that is created with two or more shapes. An imported vector image is ideal in this instance. Select the image and apply the command. Instantly, each element of the shape is placed within its own layer. This can give you exacting control over your graphics and layers.
The Document group also allows you to lock and hide all layers. Could you do this manually? Yes, but this is a quick one-stop solution.
Working with panels can become laborious because there are so many of them. The Panel Layout Sets group allows you to control how the panels are placed on the screen. There are three default settings for the most common screen resolutions. If you have a different screen resolution and want to keep the settings you are using, simply go to Command, Panel Layout Sets, Save Panel Layout. Give your panel set a name. Any time you come back to Fireworks, you can reset the panels to the layout you saved.
Finally, the Resize Selected Objects command is a visual tool that allows you to easily select and resize any object on the canvas. (See Figure 11.)
