Lenses for Family or Group Portraits

Question: What lenses do you recommend for family or group portraits?

Answer: My workhorse lens is the Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8. It is very sharp and that range of millimeters gives you ample room to move for a family portrait. Now, having said that, you have to be careful about moving too close and causing distortion. Classically, for a small group, if I can back up and use the Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8, I will do that. That lens gives access to the “classic” portrait lengths, in the neighborhood of 85 or 105 millimeters. That way, you get a bit of compression and power, and when you get the grouping arranged tightly it can be very powerful.

Ask me a question so I can answer it in a future post on this blog.
