Question: Joe, what are your top 3 lens choices for shooting portraits (standard situations) and why?
Answer: My workhorse lenses are 14-24, 24-70 and 70-200, and I do most of my portraiture with them. Occasionally I use my 200 f2 and my 50mm f1.4 to produce a portrait at really wide aperture for a lack of depth of field.
I shoot a lot of environmental portraits for my work, so the wide lenses are essential to show context. The longer glass for tight work is essential, and the 70-200 is such a versatile array of lengths, and so sharp, I really rely on it for that tight kind of character study, both in the field and in the studio.
