WTF Twitterview Twanscript with David DuChemin

By  May 8, 2009

Topics: Digital Photography

On Thursday, May 7, 2009, international photographer and Within the Frame author David DuChemin (@pixelatedimage) sat down at his computer and had a lively Twitterview (read = interview via Twitter) with @Peachpit. It was fast. It was furious. It was inspiring, enlightening, and to some, life changing. We’ve posted a transcript of the Twitterview so the wisdom can live on. Enjoy.

Peachpit: @pixelatedimage Do most of your photos start out with a vision of that photo or do you see it as it happens? (via @jrfarrar) #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - It's both. Sometimes the vision starts in the mind, sometimes out there and you react. Vision is organic. #WTF_QA

Peachpit:
@pixelatedimage Where do you find inspiration? Do you know what you want to shoot that day, or is it more spontaneous? (Via @tslusk) #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - I think it's key to remember that photography is often v. reactionary. I see, interact, interpret what's already there #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - Again, it's both. I begin (on good days) with inspiration. Other times I go looking for it. Sometimes it finds me. #WTF_QA

Peachpit:
@pixelatedimage Your subjects are special, how do you spot them? Or do you bring it out of them? (via @shizly) #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - LOL. I wish I knew! It's a reaction. You see it & somethng goes "OH! Look!" that's my sign to look at it through a lens #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - this whole "vision" thing is an intuitive thing. You see, you react, and then look through the frame to discover why. #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - Dang, that sounded pretentious! LOL #WTF_QA

Peachpit:
@pixelatedimage So has your camera become a permanent appendage? Can you leave it behind with little guilt? (via @Johnbatdorff) #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - When I'm at home I have an iPhone but never carry a camera. That gets me in trouble but taking camera to the store? No. #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - I know some shooters never leave home w/out camera, but I get tired lugging it everywhere :-) #WTF_QA

Peachpit:
@pixelatedimage Is it better to take tons of pictures or to grab only a few perfect ones? What are the pros and cons to both? #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - The tons and tons of crappy photos are often the means (for me) to get to the few perfect(?) ones. They're the grease. #WTF_QA

Peachpit:
@pixelatedimage Heads up...tough one coming! ;) #WTF_WD

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - Bring it! #WTF_QA

Peachpit:
@pixelatedimage If you had to pick 1 photo (not your own) that inspired you, which one would it be and why? (via @thetoyladywondr) #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - I think , like a lot of photogs it would be Steve McCurry's Afghan Girl, 1984. Showed me the power of an image. #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - I know by now that's a cliche, but the image is still powerful and it gave birth to many photographers of conscience. #WTF_QA

Peachpit:
@pixelatedimage How do you bridge the communication gap to elevate the image? (via LayersTV_RC) #wtf_qa

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - Language barrier, yes. Communication barrier, no. I smile alot. Act with respect and kindness. Humility. Goes a long way #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - Basic communication is non-verbal. If you love people, it comes through. All about relationship/connection #WTF_QA

Peachpit:
@pixelatedimage How much time do you spend editing your average picture (in both Lightroom/Aperture & PShop)? (via @mattdonders) #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - Not long. If it takes more than 5 minutes in LR2 I'd be shocked. A nudge here, a tweak there. usually a couple minutes. #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - I'm a big fan of creating the image in-camera and refining, not fixing, in LR. But sometimes you need to fix. :-) #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - Very little PS since LR 2 came out. 95% of my work is done in LR2 #WTF_QA

Peachpit:
@pixelatedimage Wow, that's it?! Amazing. So what inspired you to do the book, WTF? (via @nolanstern) #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - LOL, yeah that's it. But you can do a lot of damage in only a couple minutes! LOL! #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - The round-the-world trip part of the book, the journey of it, was just a ploy to get more airmiles. :-) #WTF_QA

Peachpit:
@pixelatedimage Very clever! We don't believe it, though... #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - Ok, it was also an effort to get deep-vein thrombosis. Always heard that was fun...LOL. #WTF_QA

Peachpit:
@pixelatedimage Was there a defining moment in your career? a big break? (via @wasguru) #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - There was. It was a trip to Haiti. Met a little girl we sponsor. Broke my heart and defines why I do what I do, and how. #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - It was then I knew what stories I wanted to point my lens at. An eye is important, a heart even more so. #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - That assignment led to my World Vision work which is my primary work. #WTF_QA

Peachpit:
@pixelatedimage Amazing philosophy. Is there a picture of that girl from Haiti in your book? (via @sarajanetodd) #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - There isn't. Very strict child-protection policies and I honour those. I can tell you she's gorgeous! Makes me cry. #WTF_QA

Peachpit:
@pixelatedimage Photo gear ?: If you could only use one lens (or one focal length to shoot at) what would it be? (via @mattdonders) #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - Yikes. I like the extremes. 24mm or 135mm/200 but only one? I'd take the 24 and sneak the other when no one was looking #WTF_QA

Peachpit:
@pixelatedimage In all your travels, do you run across people/places that get you down? How do u cope? (via @twviewreview) #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit Every trip has its ups/downs, something that makes me cry. But I connect with people and they are my coping mech. WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - Seems the less people have the deeper their joy or faith is and that humbles me, grounds me. #WTF_QA

Peachpit:
@pixelatedimage What is ur favorite location so far and where is one place you want to go and have not been? (via @dalbecphoto) #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - India is limitless. Ethiopia has the best coffee. Mongolia has the worst food but STUNNING. #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - But I am just dying to get somewhere totally different. Patagonia? Antarctica? My wife wants to go to Iceland! #WTF_QA

Peachpit:
@pixelatedimage This could be good...What's the craziest thing you've done to get a shot in your career? (via @nickfranklin) #wtf_qa

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - LOL. I think I block those out! usually getting too close to animals. Started a stampede with Oxen in Congo. Not pretty! #WTF_QA

Peachpit:
@pixelatedimage Final question. Where do you want to take your art next? Video? "Through the Screen"? (via @nickfranklin) #WTF_qa

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit Aw, nuts, I was just warming up :-) Sigh. Ok, reply coming in next tweet. Hmmm. Art? Next? That's a tough one...

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit I just want t keep doing what I'm doing. Books are new, I think it's a technology that might last, so maybe more of them #WTF_QA

Peachpit:
@pixelatedimage Thanks for an incredible, whirlwind twitterview! Folks, if u want more, here's a sample chapter: http://bit.ly/buQse (expand) #WTF_QA

pixelatedimage:
@Peachpit - Thanks everyone! That was fun. You know where to find me! :-) Big thanks to Peachpit! #WTF_QA
