Macromedia dominates the animation category with its Flash and Director products. There are other lesser known products, but they aren't as powerful or as accepted as Macromedia's products.

Flash – Macromedia's product has dominated the animation field as its main competitor is no longer developing its competing product. Flash players are on over 97% Internet-enabled desktops making it a non-issue to deploy Flash-based applications. Flash is for creating streaming vector animation, lightweight video, and rich Internet applications.

Director – Also from Macromedia, Director is targeted to CDs, DVDs, kiosks, and the Internet. It's most used for creating advanced 3D games and learning applications.
