The Adobe Creative Team of designers, writers, and editors has extensive, real-world knowledge of Adobe products. They work closely with the Adobe product development teams and Adobe's Instructional Communications team to come up with creative, challenging, and visually appealing projects to help both new and experienced users get up to speed quickly on Adobe software products.
This official training guide from Adobe will teach readers all they need to know to create rich interactive experiences with Flash Catalyst CS5, Adobe's exciting new interaction design tool. Flash Catalyst CS5 lets designers create real Adobe Flash and Adobe AIR applications without having to learn ActionScript.
Using step-by-step instructions in projects that progressively build skills, readers of this Classroom in a Book will learn how to prepare and import artwork from applications such as Adobe Photoshop and Fireworks into Catalyst, and then add interactive functionality in a familiar interface and with tools that are intuitive to use.
Readers will learn how libraries let them organize and reuse assets, how to use layers to view and control objects, how to work with pages and states to create interactive components, how to add transitions and action sequences, and how to work with video and sound. Readers will also learn to incorporate Flash files from other applications and use Flash Builder to extend their projects' functionality.
The companion CD provides users with all the sample files they need to complete all the projects.
“The Classroom in a Book series is by far the best training material on the market. Everything you need to master the software is included: clear explanations of each lesson, step-by-step instructions, and the project files for the students.” —Barbara Binder, Adobe Certified Instructor, Rocky Mountain Training

On the positive side: easy, comprehensive tutorials. On the negative side: too lightweight. Not detailed enough in the creation of complex interactions and showing very few samples.

The book was a very good introduction to a new Adobe product, It filled in some of the details on how Catalyst could be used in my work, that I could not find online.

This review is from: Adobe Flash Catalyst CS5 Classroom in a Book (Paperback)
I have been buying and Teaching from the Classroom in a book series for 10+ years and this one for Flash Catalyst is junk. The lessons do not build on each other and there is not even a lesson that shows how to build from scratch. The areas referenced are not even in the application its self. Some of the files do not even work or the instruction is way off. Classroom in a Book used to be the gold standard for learning the Adobe Applications this one is NOT-READY-FOR-PRIMETIME, it seems rushed and sloppy. A total wast of money. I hope that the other Books are not as much of disappointment as this one is. The Bonus content is nothing more than chapters that have been updated to the current CS5.5. Needs better editing, or something.
