The complete resource for any photographer seeking the best choice of poses!

  • Features over 1,000 images especially selected to inspire you and help expand your creativity.
  • Photographs and poses are placed in context, explaining why they do (or sometimes don’t) work. A selection of poses features an accompanying lighting diagram, giving a clear understanding of how the photo was made.
  • Includes a variety of models shot using different lighting rigs, props, and settings–in the studio and on location–making this book suitable for commercial and editorial applications.
  • Discover the secrets of success behind professional photographers’ work, and learn how to get the best out of your models on a shoot.
  • PLUS a technical how-to section gives master classes in angles, lighting, styling, and more.
In this beautiful, yet extremely practical source book, fashion photographer Eliot Siegel embarks on an ambitious project to pull together 1,000 poses for photographing models. Designed to inspire photographers and models alike, the book's poses are organized by type including standing, sitting, reclining, crouching, kneeling, and dynamic poses, as well as head and shoulder shots and expressions. For selected images, Siegel includes a lighting diagram as well as a detailed explanation of how the image was made, but in every case he explains why a pose works, or why it doesn't.

This image-packed reference also features iconic photography from prominent fashion photographers and includes a how-to chapter at the beginning of the book that provides a crash course on lighting, styling, props, and backgrounds—everything you need to know to make a woman look great, regardless of which of the 1,000 poses you wind up using.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful answer for "Where do we go now?", October 24, 2012

There's an urban legend that the reason that Guns & Roses "Sweet Child of Mine" ends with the lyrics "Where Do We Go Now" was because Axl was asking a question, not because he was singing a lyric. He literally wanted to know "where do we go now?" and that ended up sticking as part of the song.

When shooting models, sooner or later, you will run into a "Where do we go now" moment. In many cases, the model will want clear instruction about what the vision is, where to stand and where to put her hands. The photographer will need to have a good set of ideas to blast past periods of when the imagination runs dry, and avoid the moment where nobody knows what to do next.

The classic way of doing a model shoot is to get the safe shots in the bag before experimenting. The problem with experimenting is that you can get stuck with a lot of stuff that's not working before getting back on track.

That's what makes this book great, by showing how to see how... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars finally a posing book worth it's money!, December 6, 2012

There are many posing books out there, most - if not all - are useless to me. Generic poses, not much explained, unexciting photos.

This book is different. I love almost all the main photos in this book (subjective of course) and the variations shown with what to avoid and why are really helpful. Light diagrams add to the usefulness.

I don't think there's a pose not covered in this book. Keep it in your studio or bag (though it's heavy) and if you run out of steam during a shoot, open any random page and go from there.

The poses are more towards (high) fashion and maybe a bit of glam, not necessarily what you'd use to photograph grandmothers or female executives, everything is very stylish with sexy undertones.

Easy the best book I've seen on posing, and I've looked at quite some.

1.0 out of 5 stars Seriously???, January 12, 2013

OK I have no idea who the people are who gave such stellar reviews for this book, but I took their word for it and bought it. What a waste of money! This book being a "Practical source book" is so far off the mark its like comparing a nice juicy orange to its peal!
I will say nothing negative about the photos in the book as the composition in all is great so to the photographers who contributed...well done! But what this book really is is a showcase. Yes there are LOTS of images but when there are 9 on a page and it explains "the series" and the only difference between one pose and the next is a turn of the head or moving a hand from the knee to the thigh....whats the point.
The way I'd describe this book is like this...say you are going to a HI fashion show where the models are twigs and the clothing is...well lets be nice here...something that no one would ever actually wear unless you are Lady Gaga on a binge...that is what the "poses" in this book are. I would say... Read more
