Previewing Your New Site

Previewing doesn't stop with Dreamweaver. You need to preview your entire new (or updated) site once it's online and, hopefully, before it's been announced to the general public. Once you're there, you need to:

  • Proofread the site for typos, or better yet, get someone else to do it. (You've been looking at the site too long to really see it.)

  • Check every link. Especially local links. Even on toolbars. On every page.

  • If your site uses frames, make sure they don't recurse or mistarget any links. Make sure the no-frames version of your site works by looking at it in an old browser.

  • Eyeball the site for missing (broken) images.

  • Test out every *&*#$ piece of JavaScript to make sure it works.

  • Test-drive any forms and check out the form results for desired accuracy.

  • Check any download links to make sure they actually retrieve the right file.

  • If you have browser-detect or plug-in-detect scripts, test-drive them in a few different browsers to make sure they actually follow through on the redirects.

  • If you use dynamic HTML, look at it in both Explorer and Navigator to see how chewed up it looks in the browser you didn't target.

  • View the site from a machine that's not on your site to see how long it really takes to download over a modem.

  • Get a few other people to look at it. I have a few trusted friends that I e-mail first when I launch a new page and who diligently report back if something's askew. If yours is a company site, set up a beta review team to look at every page change and new page before it goes live.
