Since teaching herself HTML in 1996, Denise R. Jacobs has worked at creating and maintaining web sites, web application localization, web project management, and teaching web design/development. Currently, Denise is a Web Solutions Consultant in Miami, Florida, helping individuals and businesses increase their web knowledge, and transform their web presences by incorporating web standards, Web 2.0 tools and social media. She is passionate about teaching novices about the web and empowering them with tools and resources. She is part of the organizing committee of Social Media Club South Florida, and an active member of the Web Standards Project (WaSP) Education Task Force.

Chris Mills is a web technologist, open standards evangelist, and education agitator working at Opera Software. He writes about open standards for dev.opera.com, .net magazine, A List Apart, and more, and speaks at universities and industry conferences worldwide. Chris is the creator of the Opera Web Standards Curriculum and co-chair of the W3C Web Education Community Group. Outside work he is a heavy metal drummer, beer lover, and proud father of three.

Christopher Schmitt

Christopher Schmitt is the founder of Heatvision.com, Inc., a small new media publishing and design firm. An award-winning Web designer who has been working with the Web since 1993, Christopher interned for both David Siegel and Lynda Weinman in the mid-90s while he was an undergraduate at Florida State University working on a fine arts degree with an emphasis on graphic design.

Afterward, he earned a master's in communication for Interactive and New Communication Technologies while obtaining a graduate certificate in project management from FSU's College of Communication.

In 2000, he led a team to victory in the Cool Site in a Day competition, where he and five other talented developers built a fully functional, well-designed Web site for a nonprofit organization in eight hours.

Author of numerous Web design and digital imaging books, Christopher has also written for New Architect Magazine, A List Apart, Digital Web, and Web Reference. At conferences such as Web Visions and SXSW, Christopher has given talks demonstrating the use and benefits of practical standards-based designs. He is the list moderator for Babble, a mailing list community devoted to advanced Web design and development topics.

Christopher Schmitt, project manager and idea generator for the new media publishing company, Heatvision.com, Inc., has been a web designer and developer since 1993. He interned for both David Siegel and Lynda Weinman in the mid-90s. He has written several site reviews, interviews, and articles for print and online publications and managed a web magazine dedicated to excellence in site design (www.highfive.com). He addressed the problem of web safe colors for designers by creating and producing the Web Design Pad, that was widely sold throughout the US and abroad. He contributed four chapters to the recently published XML, HTML, XHTML Magic (0735711399) by Molly E. Holzschlag.

Since 1999, Aarron Walter has been teaching a variety of courses on Interactive Design at colleges in the United States including Temple University, the University of Georgia, and The Art Institute of Atlanta—one of the few colleges teaching web standards since 2002. His courses cover such topics as findability, nonlinear narrative, perceptual interfacing, history of communication media, user-centered interface design, dynamic web applications, and more (full course listing at https://aarronwalter.com/teaching/). From time to time, Aarron also writes articles about web development for online publications including SitePoint.com and DMXZone.com.

Aarron is the author of Building Findable Web Sites: Web Standards SEO and Beyond, which provides web developers with practical, standards-compliant solutions that will drive traffic to their site, help their audience discover new content, and encourage return traffic.

When he's not teaching or writing, Aarron runs an independent consultancy in Athens, GA, that plans, designs, and builds user- centered web sites and content management systems for clients in the Southeast.
