I just finished the book that kept me company throughout Christmas. It's a very entertaining book where Tom's experience shines through in both great pictures and clear text. Tom shows you how to approach a lot of different outdoor activities, and will give you both specific and general tips. All in all a very good book, but I cannot give it five stars. It's a bit hard to put my finger on what's wrong, but I'll try. I think Tom has put too much info into this book, and the result is that every subject is not covered in enough detail. Personally, I would prefer that each part was more thoroughly explained, and that some subjects were left out (for another book?). Anyway, I do not hesitate to recommend this book, and I'm sure a lot of readers will give it five stars. By

No one book can completely cover the gamut of topics that Tom attempts to and not be humungous in size (Tom's book is not at all humungous in size and has lots of images). Tom's book is somewhat of a survey book covering lots of subjects but without great depth in any. This is totally fine as an introduction to these subjects. One will need to learn much more depth in regards to most of the topics covered (i.e. digital photography concepts and technology, lighting, portrait photography, outdoor skills, etc) to be capable of doing the level of work that Tom does.

I was lucky enough to meet Tom in one of his classes. I say lucky, because the class was a gift from my husband. I'm an extreme amature at photography, but it didn't matter. My equipment was not exciting, but that didn't matter. Tom has that rare gift of talent (hard work) and the ability to impart knowledge to photographers at every level. His enthusiasm and passion for what he does may be why he is able to share so effectively. I'm excited to read his book. I know there will be something for every photographer in it.
