Light. It's the most transformative tool at any photographer’s disposal. Whether the lens is turned to people, wildlife, or landscape, the creative use of light is often the difference between a snapshot and a powerful photograph. As one moves along the continuum from the simplest of point and shoot cameras to the most sophisticated cameras, the major changes are usually with regard to the controls over the features available to effect the image, including ways to affect the focus and to take photographs in low light. To my way of thinking the most important of the more sophisticated features is the control over exposure, that is, the amount of light to record. It is the ability to control exposure that permits the camera user to change the captured image from a snapshot to something that displays more of how the user saw and felt the subject. The market for photography books supports this conclusion by creating so many books that cover this topic, either as part of the content, or as the sole subject of the book. "Chasing the Light" is a recent entry into this field.

The author starts out with an explanation of exposure, emphasizing the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and ISO. He... Read more

Chasing the light, by Ibarionex Perello is a photography book intended for beginner and enthusiasts. The book discusses primarily about light and shadow, how to see the light interplays with shadow and how the light affects other visual elements such as color, shape and pattern.

For beginner, Perello gives great explanation about exposure (shutter speed, aperture and ISO). Not only that, but Perello also gives his personal workflow. Perello considers to set ISO first based on the available light, aperture and shutter speed. There are a number of things I really appreciate about this book - besides the fact that it is well written and well organized.

First, the author demonstrates throughout the book that the camera does not make the photograph. There is incredible camera variation in the photographs he included in this book -- different brands and from point and shoot to pro level. Diversity is not limited to the type of camera either. It extends to the subjects of the photographs, whether it be portraiture, night photography, or landscapes. I also found particularly useful his separate chapters on close-up/macro photography and black and white photography. The variation makes the book feel accessible to photographers of different specialities and levels.

Second, the book does a great job of emphasizing the importance of understanding the intricacies of the technical aspects of exposure and light to support a photographer's ability to both discover and convey his or her own vision... Read more
