5.0 out of 5 stars Useful, Practical, Much Needed, April 16, 2013
This review is from: Designing the Conversation: Techniques for Successful Facilitation (Voices That Matter) (Paperback)
Working in a large organization communication can be tough on multiple levels. This book offers lots of great insights into improving the conversation surround design with your teams an within your organization. One of the keys to improving communication is good facilitation. Designing the Conversation provides great insights and tips for better facilitation and communication from the authors as well as many industry experts on the various aspects of facilitation and communication.

The book covers content surrounding soft skills that is gravely missing in design education and much needed for designers, project managers, product managers, etc. in our industry, and even more importantly for those just breaking into our field.

It is a definite "must read".

In the interest of full disclosure, I was asked by the authors to contribute to this book. And my comments made it to print. That said, I was actually uncertain what this book was going to end up being when it was first described to me. Now, seeing it in real life, I am amazed at how much territory the authors have covered. My contributions relate to public speaking, but there are also incredibly useful chapters on focus-group facilitation, agenda preparation, usability testing - a LOT of other stuff. Part of what makes the book particularly interesting are the myriad of anecdotal stories contributed by key figures within the user-experience community.

To be frank, I've been in this business a long time and am a pretty decent facilitator. But I'd be a liar if I didn't admit that I learned a LOT from this book! If you have ever have to run a meeting, make a presentation, or even just ask your boss for a raise, I guarantee you will find something that will make the purchase... Read more
