Preparing Your Supplies

In addition to the roaster, aluminum sheets, and water, this technique requires the following supplies for best results:

  • Cascade Complete powder detergent. Other brands of dishwasher detergent may or may not work.
  • Trisodium phosphate (TSP), a cleaning compound that should be available at your local home center. This is the type of phosphate that used to be in dishwasher detergents.
  • Various objects—cutouts, ovals, string, fabric, and so on—to place on individual plates or sandwich between pairs of plates (see Figure 3). Any object placed on the plate will create a resist.
  • Aluminum foil to separate individual plates and plate pairs. The foil causes oxides of the metal to mark the plate.
