Final Thoughts
As you've seen in this article, Fireworks CS5 is packed with a lot of productivity features[md]many small things that result in much time saved. And this list doesn't even cover everything! That said, there's always room for improvement:
- Tool tips, introduced in CS4, still don't work when you're importing images or page designs. It would be really helpful if you could get those pixel-level coordinates to display when you're importing a file.
- FXG 2.0 support is strictly one-way. It would be great if Fireworks could actually edit in FXG format[md]or, barring that, if Flash Catalyst supported native Fireworks PNG files.
- If you work with Photoshop files in Fireworks, you probably would like more support for adjustment layers. Fireworks CS5 imports adjustment layers, but the effects are flattened.
- More sophisticated editing tools would be nice. Now, I'm not expecting Fireworks to start doing content-aware fills, but better selection and retouching options would be great. In my opinion, even the addition of the basic Healing brushes would be helpful.
Everyone has their own preferred software features. But even if your favorite features are missing, this version of Fireworks still provides plenty to like. With the dramatic improvements to performance and stability in this release, perhaps we'll see more "creative" changes in future versions.
