Another Day, Another File Type
To package the MXI and SWC files into the MXP file, we need to complete only a few more steps:
Create a folder on your desktop named Staging and drag the MXI and SWC files into it. When packaging components, it's necessary to make sure that all the files that will be packaged are in the same place, and this folder makes it easier to double-check.
Launch the Macromedia Extension Manager.
Choose File > Package Extension.
In the Select Extension to Package dialog box, browse to the Staging folder on your desktop and choose the Percentage Loader.mxi file.
In the Save Extension Package As dialog box, name the file Percentage Loader.mxp and click OK. Save it to the Staging folder.
When the packaging process is complete, a message appears that reads "The extension package was successfully created," as shown in Figure 3. Click OK to close the message window.
Figure 3 Ahh. The sweet smell of success.
Now we can install the extension. To do this:
Open the Staging folder.
Double-click the Percentage Loader.mxp file icon.
Choose Accept to accept the Extension Disclaimer (this is added automatically by the Extension Manager).
When you see the message that says your extension installed successfully, click OK.
In Flash, choose Reload from the Options menu in the Components panel to reload the list of available components.
You should now see the name 10 Minutes with Flash in the Components panel. Expand the set to reveal the Percentage Loader component, as seen in Figure 4.
Figure 4 Branding by proxy.
Cool, huh? Now you are forced to see the 10 Minutes with Flash name every time you open the Components panel, and my branding mission is complete. Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha! Of course, you can uninstall this component set by simply quitting Flash and choosing File > Remove Extension in the Extension Manager. But you wouldn't want to do that, would you?
From here, you can email your MXP file, post it online for downloading, and yes, send it to your friends by carrier pigeon. And all anyone has to do to install it is double-click the file. This ought to win you some extra brownies at your next Matrix gathering.
Until next time, happy Flashing!
