Audition Replaces Soundbooth
Just reading "Audition replaces Soundbooth" as I write it gives me a warm feeling inside. Audition is such a lovely application to use, I sometimes find myself looking for reasons to start it.
Soundbooth was intended as a post-production sound-editing tool for video editors; it made common tasks easy for people who aren't completely familiar with audio terminology and workflows. I think that Soundbooth answered that call beautifully, and it was perfect for many users. But it had limitations, in terms of performance as well as workflow flexibility.
Audition looks and feels a lot like Soundbooth, but it's actually a massive upgrade, and the release of CS5.5 brings new features, including a new playback engine. Unlike Soundbooth, which can only remove unwanted sounds, the Audition interface is highly responsive, and it can "heal" audio by using the Spectral Display (see Figure 15).
Audition has a fully featured Multitrack display, as shown in Figure 16, with a comprehensive mixer, including submixes (see Figure 17), plus clip and track effects (see Figure 18) and much more advanced diagnostics than in Soundbooth.
