Brian Wood loves the handy new (and often long-awaited) features in Illustrator Creative Cloud (CC). In this article he shows you what they are and how to use them.

With this new January 2014 release of Adobe Illustrator CC (17.1), we have a series of enhancements to existing features as well as a few new ones. The program continues to be tied into the Creative Cloud (CC) features, such as Typekit fonts, and several of the core features such as path editing and a few of the drawing tools, such as the Pencil tool, have been enhanced. I always pause a bit when I hear that anything to do with path creation/editing has changed, but I really believe these updates to be a step forward.

What’s New Dialog

In this newest version of Illustrator, when you launch the program, a new “What’s New” dialog box appears. This dialog box is meant to draw your attention to the top new/improved features and offer a brief video training to show you how it works (see Figure 1). You can also click the View All Enhancements link on the first screen of the dialog box to open the Illustrator CC features web page in a browser.

I can appreciate this dialog box because it gives a brief overview of the features, and when you are finished (or you don’t need to use the dialog box), you can dismiss it by clicking Done.

One thing to note is that the videos in the dialog box will not play if you don’t have an internet connection.
