Jane Ellen Stevens is a multimedia journalist, consultant and lecturer at the University of California Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. A long-time science and technology journalist, she’s worked for the Boston Globe, the San Francisco Examiner, and founded a syndicated science and technology feature service with clients that included the Los Angeles Times, the Dallas Morning News, the Washington Post, and Asahi Shimbun's AERA Magazine. She’s written for many magazines, including National Geographic, and worked for New York Times Television as a videojournalist. She did multimedia reporting for several Web sites, including Discovery Channel Online and MSNBC.com. She consults with news organizations that are making the transition to Web-centric newsrooms, including the Ventura County Star (an E.W. Scripps organization), the Oakland Tribune (part of Media News Group), and the San Diego Union-Tribune. In this endeavor, she trains journalists to be multimedia reporters and editors, assists in redesigning the newsroom and beat structure, and develops special Web sections, including health & safety and neighborhood Web sites. She developed the first multimedia reporting class at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, which she has been teaching since Fall 2000. She also co-developed a multimedia reporting workshop for mid-career journalists, which has been taught under the auspices of the Western Knight Center for Specialized Journalism (now the Knight New Media Center) since 2001. Currently, as executive editor for the Web at Stanford’s Hopkins Marine Station, she is revamping three science news sites.
