In this article, I’ve presented two different ways of implementing a product recommendation system in your e-commerce site. Each approach has its own strengths and weaknesses; only you, or your client, are in the best position to determine which is right for the particular site. After going through all the thought and work, do make sure you use the new system to its full potential, making recommendations when customers:
- Are looking at a product
- Have items in their cart (a “View Cart” page is perfect for upselling and cross-selling)
- Have previously ordered from the site (which would give you the opportunity to make recommendations via email or on the home page)
