Adding Alternative Text to Figures in Tagged PDF Files

If your authoring program does not have the capability to include alternative text for figures, you can add this text description to figures in the tagged PDF file, using the full version of Adobe Acrobat 5. After opening a tagged PDF file, the following steps show you how:

  1. Select Window, Tags. The Tags window displays the logical structure tree of the document.

  2. Look in the structure tree for the first <Figure> element. This is most likely nested within other elements of the structure tree (see Figure 5).

Figure 5 The <Figure> element in the logical structure tree in the Tags palette.

  3. Click on the <Figure> element. In the Tags palette, select Tags, Element Properties. The Element Properties window is displayed.

  4. Click in the Alternative Text field, and type the text description of the figure.

  5. Click OK when you have finished. Good job! This figure is now screen reader-friendly.
