Using Workspaces

Workspaces are an older version of toolsets. The main difference is that you activate them using the workspace buttons (found on the More tab of the Command palette) rather than the Toolset menu. Most editors find workspaces less intuitive to use than toolsets. However, those who have used Avid software before may feel comfortable continuing to use workspaces.

Workspaces operate just like toolsets. A workspace is a custom arrangement of particular tools and windows that you can connect to user settings that share its name. You can create multiple workspaces for different tasks such as effects editing or capturing. Once created, you can map workspaces to keys on the keyboard.

To create a workspace setting:

  1. Open and arrange your tools and windows according to your preferences.
  2. On the Settings tab of the Project window, open the Fast menu and select Workspaces.
  3. Select a listed workspace or duplicate an existing workspace to create a new one ( Figure 3.15 ).

  4. Double-click the newly created workspace setting. The Workspace Settings dialog box appears ( Figure 3.16 ).

  5. Select one of the following options:
    • Continually Update This Workspace: Xpress Pro saves the workspace each time you change your tool arrangements.

    • Manually Update This Workspace: With this option selected, a Save Workspace Now button appears, allowing you to save the workspace in its current configuration. Xpress Pro saves changes to your tool arrangements only when you click the Save Workspace Now button ( Figure 3.17 ).

  6. Click OK. Xpress Pro updates your workspace tool arrangement according to the changes you made.

To link other settings to a workspace:

  1. On the Settings tab of the Project window, create custom settings that have the same name.
  2. Give a workspace the same name as the other settings you want to link to it.
  3. Double-click the workspace setting to open its dialog box.
  4. Select Activate Settings Linked By Name ( Figure 3.18 ).

    Xpress Pro links all settings that have the same custom name with the workspace of the same name ( Figure 3.19 ).

To map a workspace to the keyboard:

  1. Select Workspaces from the Settings tab Fast menu to list all available workspaces.
  2. Open the Command palette by doing one of the following:
    • Choose Tools > Command Palette.
    • Press Ctrl+3 (Windows) or Command+3 (Mac).
  3. On the Command palette, click the More tab. The W1 through W8 buttons represent your workspace settings in the (alphabetical) order that they appear on the Settings tab. The first is W1, the second W2, and so on ( Figure 3.20 ).

  4. On the Command palette, select 'Button to Button' Reassignment.
  5. On the Settings tab of the Project window, double-click a Keyboard setting to open the Keyboard settings window.
  6. To map the first workspace setting listed on the Settings tab, drag the W1 button to an available key in the Keyboard settings window. Map W2, W3, and so on to the remaining workspaces. (For more information on how to map buttons from the Command palette to the keyboard, see the next section, "Mapping Buttons to the Keyboard and Interface.") Now, whenever you press W1, for example, Xpress Pro will activate the first workspace listed on the Settings tab.

To switch to a different workspace:

Do one of the following:

  1. On the Settings tab of the Project window, select a different workspace setting by clicking to the left of its name, so that a check mark appears.
  2. Press a workspace key mapped to the keyboard (W1, W2, and so on).

Your tool arrangement and settings change according to the new workspace.

To delete a workspace:

  1. On the Settings tab of the Project window, select a workspace setting.
  2. Press Delete on the keyboard. Xpress Pro eliminates the workspace.
