Apply Creative Special Effects
The digital imaging tools in electronic graphic design encourage you to experiment with images and create effects that you could never imagine before you started clicking those buttons. In addition to the many special effects filters and capabilities built into the most popular image editing software packages, there are hundreds of third-party plug-in filters available that can turn ordinary images into amazing visuals. Experiment with them—learn to use your software!
- Add colorful embellishments to ordinary photos.
- Change the color from ordinary to unusual or unrealistic.
- Make a photo partially color.
- Experiment with different compositing modes between layers.
- Invert the image.
- Saturate or desaturate the color.
Photoshop filters can add visual interest or even salvage a photo of inferior quality. We applied the “Cutout” filter to this image. The airbrush effect of soft color gradations in flat areas of color was achieved by over-sharpening the image using large “Amount” and “Radius” settings in the “Unsharp Mask” filter dialog.
You can selectively control how much color appears and exactly where it appears using the saturation tools. Of course, a technique should be used to enhance your message, not merely to prove you can use Photoshop.
