Checking Your Work!

The final step when solving problems on tests is to check your work. Here, the final step in checking your connection is to test its strength. While there are numerous Web sites around that will cheerfully scan your Internet connection to look for signs of weakness, we've found these two to be particularly informative and useful:

  • Steve Gibson research offers his free ShieldsUp!! And Probe My Ports services to all comers. Use those excellent tools at http://grc.com/.

  • The folks at Security Space make their livings by performing security audits for their customers. As a come on to enlist your business, they offer a decent, free scan of your Internet link. Visit www.securityspace.com and register to take their free trial.

Either (or both) of these services will tell you if there are any obvious open doors into your PC or network through your Internet connection. They're both also pretty good at recommending how to fix or work around any problems they may find. Thus, this final check-up is an invaluable way to make sure you've done the job correctly once you've tried to secure your Internet connection.
