Interview with Featured Flickr Photographer Andrew Gibson

Every month in our Photography newsletter, we feature the work of a new photographer who has contributed to our Photography Newsletter Flickr group. This month, we chose the photo Bethell’s Beach by Auckland, New Zealand-based photographer Andrew Gibson.

Peachpit: What inspired you to take this shot?

Andrew: The west coast near Auckland is breathtakingly beautiful. The mountains descend into the sea, and the cliffs and beaches are pounded by large waves and wind. It’s a photographer’s paradise and I love it. My aim here was to experiment with a nine-stop neutral density feature and long shutter speeds. I was drawn by the silhouette of the distant rocks.

Peachpit: Camera settings?

Andrew: I used an EOS 5D Mark II with an EF 85mm f/1.8 lens. A nine-stop neutral density filter over the lens gave me a shutter speed of 30 seconds at f/6.7 and ISO 100. The camera was tripod-mounted to prevent camera shake.

Peachpit: Post-processing?

Andrew: I processed the Raw file in Lightroom, where I converted it to black and white and split-toned it. The processing is quite heavy – I darkened the sky to add drama to the image and guide the viewer’s eye towards the rock formations on the horizon.

Peachpit: Matte or glossy?

Andrew: Matte.

Peachpit: Who or what inspires you?

I’m inspired by beautiful places and the sea. Photographically speaking, I get a lot of inspiration from photographers like Bruce Percy (, Matt Brandon ( and Gavin Gough (

Peachpit: Who are you? Where can we find you online?

Andrew: I’m a freelance writer and photographer. I’m the Technical Editor of EOS magazine (, a UK publication dedicated to EOS cameras. I also write photography ebooks for Craft & Vision ( You can visit my website and blog at I also have a Facebook page at and I’m on Twitter at
