Photoshop filters give digital painters and illustrators an alchemical array of creative effects quickly and easily. Filters can transform a standard photograph to give it the look of an oil painting, pencil drawing, or old film still, for example. They can be used to smudge an image, tear  its edges, infuse it with a neon glow--in fact, the range of effects extends way beyond the standard settings as filters can be configured and combined in any number of ways.

This beautifully designed visual reference opens with a brief introduction for beginners on how to set up smart filters, use the filter gallery, adjust the blend modes for different filters, and identify the effect of each blend mode.

The bulk of the book, however, serves as a visual reference to the many, many, many types of filters within Photoshop, including artistic, brush stroke, distort, pixelate, sketch, stylize, texture filters, and more. For each group of filters, the book provides an overview that broadly explains the effects of each group of filters and how different settings affect them. The book then goes into greater detail showing swatches of photographs with the filters applied so readers can see the affects of the filters--used with their default settings, as well as with incremental changes made to their setttings. The swatches create an invaluable reference, saving the reader from experimenting by having a ready-made, look-it-up guide to the possible effects of each filter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Encyclopedic Get THIS ONE, July 14, 2012
This review is from: Best Photoshop Filters (Paperback)
There are only a couple relatively up to date books on Photoshop filters, and you need to check out both the date and the number of pages before you invest. This wonderful book has twice or more the number of pages as the next best sellers, which are 10 to 19 bucks less but far smaller and less complete, as well as less recent than this gem. Although this one isn't called an "encyclopedia" of filters, it covers more filters and effects than those that do have that in the title! Not only stock filters, but tweaks and online sources for customs like fractal filters that many of your fellow digital artists swear by.

I'm an artist in a digital art studio (Shader Joe's) and we use filters all the time. Until now, it took three books and a binder full of Google searched filter results to organize what's out there. Even so, until now, there was no good information (except experimentation) to show you how to tweak, adjust, use and modify these many filters. Each filter is given not... Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Not that useful, October 9, 2012

This book would have been great before the digital age but with today's software that duplicates filter effects right on your screen I didn't find the book very useful.

If you expect to find info on the new Photoshop CS6 filters you will be disappointed because its not in this first edition.

Peachpit Press does absolutely everything possible to avoid contact with customers. You cannot reach them by phone, and they do not answer questions sent via their website forms.

So when a new edition of this book that covers the current Photoshop is anybody's guess.

Get this if you enjoy great tech books that are outdated when you buy them.
